Bamburgh Castle & Seahouses
The castle dominates the village and the coast. The great Whin Sill Crag on which the castle sits has been defended since the Iron Age.
Northumbrian Kings have been crowned here, Vikings have invaded the fortress and it fell to the Normans.
Thought to be totally impregnable it was the first castle to be taken by the artillery during the War of the Roses. The golden sand beaches are also popular. The village can get very busy in the summer.
Close to Bamburgh is Seahouses harbour the place to get a boat trip to the Farne Islands. Boat trips last about 2-3 hours. The attraction for visitors to the Farne Island is the wildlife: birds such as the puffin and seals.
Dunstanburgh Castle English Heritage
Close to Alnwick, this romantic ruin sits on the edge of a windswept cliff, overlooking the sea. It is said to be haunted by Sir Guy the Seeker, who failed to awaken an enchanted princess here.
The wall was built under the orders of Emperor Hadrian. Construction began in AD122 and took 8 years. The building work was undertaken by soldiers from 3 legions and when completed the wall stretched 80 Roman miles from coast to coast.
A tidal island which gets immersed by the sea twice daily, check tidal times before crossing! The main centre for Christianity in the Dark Ages, the Island was given to St Aidan in AD635 by the King of Northumbria. St Cuthbert whose life and teachings acted like a magnet for pilgrims died here in AD687.
Warkworth Castle English Heritage
Shakespeare set three scenes of his play Henry IV here and described Warkworth Castle as “this worm-eaten hold of ragged stone”. The spectacular keep rises up above the River Coquet.
The Old Pretender was proclaimed here in 1715.
Warkworth is very attractive with lovely tearooms and some craft shops. The beaches are long and sweeping with huge sand dunes.
